The Municipality of Struga is a tourist city and during the tourist season, the number of people living or staying in the city increases three times. About 40,000 inhabitants of the city and the surrounding rural communities are connected to the water supply network of the city of Struga, as well as a village from the neighboring municipality of Debarca. One of the basic conditions for the development of tourism is the uninterrupted supply of drinking water, as well as improving the quality of drinking water. The condition of the water supply network at the moment is very bad primarily due to the age of the water supply installation - about 50 years, ie obsolescence of the infrastructure and due to the material from which the pipes are made (asbestos - cement) which is carcinogenic and harmful to human health, especially when the pipes are damaged and it ends up in the water being distributed. In the summer months, due to the increased number of users of the water supply network, as well as due to frequent network failures, the water supply is interrupted and negatively affects the development of tourism. Frequent occurrence of water supply network defects is caused, among other things, by improper excavations of road infrastructure and other construction activities, due to the lack of maps of the underground infrastructure that would help determine the exact location of the underground infrastructure before start with activities that potentially damaged it. Frequent repair of defects causes small pieces of damaged asbestos - concrete water supply infrastructure to end up in the water supply network, which is a danger to human health, and especially increases the risk of cancer. By replacing asbestos - cement pipes with PVC pipes will reduce the risk to the health of citizens, and also will reduce the number of defects that prevent water supply in the municipality. The project has an impact on the health and quality of life of the entire population by improving the quality of drinking water by replacing the old and dilapidated asbestos - cement infrastructure and reducing the number of defects and delays in water supply.
